What You Need To Know about SSL, Digital Certificates

A secure socket layer (SSL) certificate is required to create an encrypted, secure connection between network-connected machines and web servers. Learn how to request and install an SSL certificate on your server.

Historically, personal digital certificates have been leveraged for a variety of functions, especially anything related to encrypting emails and signing documents. Today, there are solutions that are simpler and easier than enrolling and configuring the use of digital certificates.

UT Dallas users no longer need email certificates to encrypt email messages with other members of UT Dallas. By default, emails sent within our Microsoft 365 email system are encrypted to protect your message. If you need to email someone outside UT Dallas that needs to be encrypted, as it contains confidential or controlled UTD data, you can do so easily while drafting your message. Learn how to send encrypted UTD email.

If you need to sign a document for UT Dallas business purposes, the Office of Budget and Finance offers document signing through DocuSign.

If you have needs outside these two functions for a personal digital certificate, please email infosecurity@utdallas.edu.
